Customer Reviews
its harmonious
It's a subtle looking little range. We bought it to replace a 30 year old Kenmore. Lack the small size to fit in the space between the cabinets in the kitchen and we wanted the smooth top, thinking it would be credulous to keep clean. The pretty part is the only good thing about this range. You have to use special cleaner for the top or it will scratch, twist iron skillits are not recomended, and the oven will only go to 400 degrees(no matter what the knob says. You cannot have top and bottom elements customary at the same time (in the oven). The large burners don't put out anymore btu's than the small burners and it takes forever to bluster a pot of water. The burners cycle on and off in some weird pattern. Needless to say it takes longer to do any pot or pan to temp. The controls constantly stick in the off position and you have to pull them out and then push them back in to get them to work. The stove at home without the stainless backsplash/vent and it took almost a year to get it from avanti. We've had this stove over a year now and absolutely cannot think of anything good to say about it, except it's very nice looking. Can't recommend this unit.

A Dazzling Experience: Sesame Flyers Inc…25 years and Counting ...
It’s the time of year again…Carnival in New York City! The West Indian American Day Parade will soon be upon us and what better way to pay homage but to explore one of the parade’s greatest and oldest masquerade organizations, Sesame Flyers International.
The West Indian Day Parade in New York welcomes over 2 million people annually and poised and eager to entertain those 2 million onlookers is Sesame Flyers International, a nonprofit organization that has been in the business for over 25 years.
I sat down with Mr. Winston Munroe and Chief of Staff, Aisha Carr to find out more about this esteemed organization. Mr. Munroe is one of the directors of the organization, the chairperson of the Mas Committee, a founding member of the organization, former chair and former president.
While growing up, a few friends got together realizing we’d had the best of both worlds, having been involved in the music and the cultural aspects of the country of Trinidad and Tobago. Migrating to the United States, most of us had children here and we thought it was necessary to form this organization and incorporate that culture into their lives so that our kids would inherit some aspect of the Caribbean culture. It started out as a family organization and it really blossomed into something that is worthwhile in the community right now.
We run two Beacon programs. The first is an After School Program for kids from 1st -12th grades. We provide basic after school activities including homework help, dance, steel pan, and for the older kids we provide them with job development skills that they would need to go into the workforce. Then we have the Summer Youth Employment Program which is sponsored by the City of New York. We locate jobs for young people and the city pays for it, we place them and supervise them. This year we placed over 500 young people in jobs through our program. We continue throughout the year to prepare them for the job force, through peer-mentoring and various workshops.

Coume del Mas
Coume Del Mas by Tom Cannavan, 09/09
Early in 2006, occasional wine-pages contributor and old friend of mine from the wine trade in Scotland, Andy Cook, reported on his visit to the Coume del Mas estate in Roussillon. At the time Andy
had not long graduated from Lincoln University in New Zealand with a diploma in Viticulture & Oenology. A few years earlier Andy had followed his dream of becoming a wine maker, and given up a life
selling wine in Scotland to try his hand at producing it. On a fact-finding and work experience stint in Roussillon, he rather fell in love with the wines of Coume del Mas. This is what he wrote in 2006:
"This is harsh, rugged Roussillon country where the weather ranges from searingly hot sunshine to bitterly cold with violent winds (the Tramontane, which blows off the Pyrenées).
Phillipe Gard produces wines from both appellations at his Coume del Mas winery, and his examples shine out with their purity and honesty."
Well, just a few years on and Andy has settled into life in Collioure, marrying his Scottish fiancé, having their first baby, and finding a job as assistant winemaker at
Coume del Mas, working alongside owner and winemaker Phillipe Gard (right) on his 12 hectares of vineyard. Andy also makes his own range of wines under the Cook Wines label, and has a negociant business
with Phillipe Gard called Tramontane Wines.
Wines of Coume de Mas
Coume del Mas farms near-organically, and work in the vineyard is done by hand, or with
ploughing with horses where the terrain allows. Not long ago Andy and Phillipe came to Scotland to show their wines in a dinner at the terrific Seafood
restaurant in the seaside village of St Monans, not far from St Andrews.
Various
Coume del Mas wines were shown, some of which are available from Luvians Bottle Shops in St Andrews and Coupar. Andy also gave me a preview of his new 'boutique' label Consolation, which is joining his
own Cook Wines range....

Throwing Out China Made Food
The river’s flow ranges from murky white to a bright shade of orange and the waters are so viscous that they barely ripple in the breeze. In Shangba, the river brings death, not sustenance.
“All the fish died, even chickens and ducks that drank from the river died. If you put your leg in the water, you’ll get rashes and a terrible itch,” said He Shuncai, a 34-year-old rice farmer who has lived in Shangba all his life.
“Last year alone, six people in our village died from cancer and they were in their 30s and 40s.” Every year, an estimated 460,000 people die prematurely in China due to exposure to air and water pollution, according to a 2007 World Bank study.
