Where to get basic sewing machine? - English Forum Switzerland

I have a Migros brand Miostar that I paid just over CHF 100 for on sale. It does straight stitch, zig-zag, reverse, bobbin threading, button holes and invisible hem (with a different foot) and I mainly just use it for taking up trousers and jeans. Had it 5 years now and no problems. I've owned many brands in my lifetime and always had something go wrong on the machine. My last one kept jamming the cotton in reverse.

Some Interesting Threads About Quilting Fabric

In answer to the question, what are quilting fabrics; we need to look back at the history of quilting fabrics.

During the American civil war the ladies in the South would raise funds for their soldiers by sewing and selling quilts. Well, the war went on a lot longer than anyone had anticipated and the ladies quilting changed from fundraising to bedding. In fact, it got so bad that there ended up being a shortage of quilting fabrics. Near the end of the war, people were tearing apart old mattresses and carpets in a desperate search for any kind of fiber that could be used as quilting fabric.

Back in Victorian times quilting was a pastime for the rich and pampered as they were the only ones who could afford the fancy materials being used in their quilts. One popular craze was something called crazy quilts. These quilts would sport many kinds of contrasting materials, colors and designs. So the Victorian quilters were always looking for eye-catching and outrageous quilting fabrics. It was not unusual to find velvet, silk and brocade doing duty as quilting fabrics. Years later the Victorian quilters also began introducing flannels, denims and other cottons into their crazy quilts' list of acceptable quilting fabrics.

Many of the Victorian crazy quilts are still around today and can be viewed in museums and other quilting displays. Many of them still look wonderful. The wild variety of quilting fabrics as eye catching today as they were centuries ago. Unfortunately, the one quilting fabric that did not age well was silk. If you see a crazy quilt that sports pieces of silk you will quickly notice that those pieces of quilting fabric have deteriorated quickly.

So now you know a little of the history of quilting fabrics, but what do you know about looking after your quilt.

    Crochet Together

It is possible when attaching pieces together to choose a method of joining from either sewing or crocheting. If sewing pieces together you can either use an ordinary over-lock method or backstitch. If you decide to crochet the pieces together then you have another two choices; a slip stitch seam or a double crochet seam.

Crocheting pieces means that the finished seam becomes part of the pattern as it makes a ridge effect, which can look great in certain types of pattern. Or you can choose to make the seam hardly seen at all.

As you can imagine these four different methods all give different finished effects - so vary in suitability depending on what you are making. The four techniques are listed below, along with a look at the overall effect it gives to the finished garment.

Technique One: Sewing Together Using Backstitch. The effects are similar to technique four - with the exception that the ridge is slightly thinner. So if ridge is at the back then it leaves you with less of a seam.

So as you can see there are choices to be made even after you have finished crocheting up your garment. Always remember the overall look of any finished piece can be enhanced or ruined by the finishing process. So it makes sense to get used to using all of the techniques mentioned above. It can make a huge difference!

Does Brother sewing machines require Brother thread ?

Q: I see from product reviews that some folks are having trouble with bobbin thread tangling on Brother sewing/embroidery machines. Is is because they require special thread for the bobbin ?

A: No. Generally it either means that they put the bobbin in incorrectly or that there's something wrong with the hook system of the machine. Using good quality thread will help prevent problems and prolong the life of your machine, but it doesn't have to be Brother thread.

does brother sewing machines only take thread made by brother?

Q: I just bought a Brother Pacesetter2003D sewing machine and the bobbin is acting up like spaghetti and to my dismay the thread breaking. Then all of a sudden the machine froze and the neddle will not move up and down. HELP ANY ONE OUT HAVE THIS MACHINE? Also, does Brother Sewing Machine (Pacesetter) have to use the Brother Pacesetter embroidery thread only? Could this be the issue...

A: You can use any thread you want.

    Turn off the power.

Open the throat plate and clean out any lint and thread that may have accumulated there.

Be sure you lift the presser foot when threading so the tension can grab the thread.

Re-check the insertion of the bobbin to make sure the thread is feeding from it in the correct direction and through the proper guides.
