THE LAST DOOR... DOWN THE HALL: Digital Collage - Letter Home
This young man is a mill worker from North Carolina. When I see him I thank my lucky stars I never had to send one of my sons off to work to help support the family. I usually get a phone call every Sunday or Monday from my boys. I tried to pretend I was his Mother - waiting for the letter home that week. I love how he has outgrown his jacket. The hat gives him a rakish more mature than his age look, hiding the little boy beneath. He is ten. You must not for one instant give up the effort to build new lives for yourselves. Creativity means to push open the heavy, groaning doorway to life. This is not an easy struggle. Indeed, it may be the most difficult task in the world, for opening the door to your own life is, in the end, more difficult than opening the door to the mysteries of the universe. I just wanted to take the time to say Thank You for all of the nice an encouraging comments an e-mails I have received. I have tried to e-mail those of you I could back, so for those I could not, I just want you to know I tried. Your thoughts and comments have meant the world to me. I have also enjoyed and been inspired by the links to your blogs and web sites. Many of them will be listed in my favorites in the next few weeks. Again, Thank you! Elizabeth Combine sugar and one cup water in small saucepan over medium heat. Watch and stir till boils. Reduce heat and simmer for three to four minutes, stir every once in awhile. Remove from heat and cool completely. I pour it into lemonade pitcher and stick in frig for a half hour or so. Then combine the rest of the ingredients and stir well. Serve over ice with garnish. Makes about 2 1/2 quarts. From the kitchen to the studio is what I call this. I am sure you have seen or even own one of those revolving spice racks with all the jars in them. Spices are only good for a few months. So when they are all stale, clean out that spice rack and fill it with embellishments. Buttons, jacks, even fibers - those little plastic tops make...

With an expanding family it was time to make some tough decisions about space in our house. I made the big call and offered to hand over my craft room to be the new guest room. Then the existing guest room (which adjoins Tara’s room) can become Tara’s new big girls room.
It was a tough call to make. But when I looked at it from an efficiency perspective it was quite obvious. I don’t actually craft in there very often. I was limited to being in there when Tara was asleep otherwise a) I couldn’t watch her or b) she’d tear the room apart. So I really wasn’t in there much. And it was turning into a giant hoard room. Hardly practising what I preach when it comes to sustainable crafting.
So I decided to set myself a challenge to consolidate the room to one filing cabinet and one tall set of shelves. I’m only allowed to keep what will fit in there. This means getting rid of a heap of stuff.
Readers might remember last year Cate from Polka Dot Rabbit started the Buy Nothing Craft Month . It completely changed my crafting. Rather than buying piles of crap because I

I said goodbye to my status as a resident of California, the state I've lived in since birth, last Saturday. The freaky people were out in full force to celebrate a change of pace with me. Body to body, forty thousand pairs of dancing feet deep in Golden Gate Park. Power to the Peaceful. Sychronistic beauty in that while I arrive with one group of amazing individuals, I manage to stumble upon all the right people while wandering aimlessly in the most random of corners. How could I assume I would be able to exit an area where my former life(style) was so established without fitting farewells from all directions?
Met my mom at a sketchy Bart station in the Mission District of San Francisco, rescued the dog from mi amigas apartamento, strapped a bicycle and two over sized hula hoops to the roof of my car, and set out on a grand adventure. Short term goal: dough nuts before dusk. Long term objective: drive across the continental divide and set up homestead in Colorado. Here we go.
We made it about ten miles (in the kind of traffic I'm convinced only California has) before the first gas stop: $3.39 per gallon and my mom is flabbergasted. North on I-80, riding right along the border of a town I called home three months ago. Passing the last underpass, and it becomes that place from my past, backdrop of the stories that all who come later will hope for sanity sake I am exaggerating. Leaving my shadow behind, like Peter Pan. Except I won't be coming back for mine. The sun rises to the East, and straight on 'till morning.
Winding up through the Sierras, one lane bordered on either side by concrete divides. In the dark. Nevada flats and my i-pod out of batteries. There is nothing out there except for forgotten governmental testing sites, conspiratorial extra terrestrials, and the occasional long haul truckers. The eastern tip of Oregon would be exactly the same, except the man in the gas station is nice enough to explain over $.95 coffee at four a.m. that we have in fact crossed into another state.
