I'm a retired teacher.I have been married for 36 years and have 4 kids. My husband and I went to school K-12 together but never dated until I was in college and he came home from Vietnam. We were born and raised in this small town and my kids are 4th generation on both sides of the family. Our backgrounds are in wheat farming.
I have always loved stamping but I got really serious about it several years ago. Cardmaking and scapbooking are now my passion.

I bought the Janome 344 sewing machine quite a few years ago to replace a seamstress machine I had. At first it worked fine did the basic sewing I wanted. But then I had curtains to make,and a mother of the bride dress it was a nightmare.
Everytime I stopped sewing I had to adjust the tensions the thread spacing was very poor. You could really see the difference a good machine had made previously. I take good care of my machines I have an embroidery business and know the value of oiling and timing.
But the poorly made nylon gears just didn't hold up and now I am really looking at gears in the new machines. Most are the nylon and they will holdup for only so long good luck.

A: It will depend on the model when making a comparison of any brand.
A higher end Singer may well be a better machine than a lower end Janome.
Visit a Janome dealer and try out the machine and then you will have an idea if it is for you. Do the same with a Singer dealer.
If you do not buy from a dealer, do not expect great service on any machine you did not buy from them.

A: I believe you answered your own question. What good is a machine that will only sew together to layers of thin cotton?
Take the money you were going spend on this machine and visit sewing shops to see what they can do for you. Tell them you have a limited budget or they will start by showing you the Rolls!
Tell them what kind of sewing you want to do. A good sewing machine should be able to sew fabrics ranging from nylon to canvas.
You want a machine that has a buttonhole feature and sews a nice even straight stitch.
Ask to test what they offer.
A used machine may be a good machine to start with.
