THE PIECE: A vintage treadle sewing machine by the Singer Manufacturing Co., from about 1890

THE OWNER: Marenthia Lagarde of New Orleans recently bought this vintage sewing machine because it reminded her of one that her mother had. "It has what I believe to be the original attachments, and it works. I remember my grandmother had one, and it was passed on to my mother. I don't know what happened to it over the years, or how my mother parted with it. When I came across this one at the Goodwill store, I had to have it, and the price was right." The tag said $19.

A HOUSEHOLD NAME: While a string of minor inventions led to the creation of the first sewing machine, it was Isaac Singer, a New York native, who laid the greatest claim to producing and marketing the first practical device for automated sewing. Adding his own innovations to a machine that was being manufactured by Lerow and Blodgett in Boston, Singer formed his own company in 1851 and became the leading manufacturer of sewing machines not only in the United States, but also the world, in only a few years. Although the first Singer machines were marketed to the sewing industry, the company soon developed a lightweight model, known as the Grasshopper, that was intended for home use. Priced at $100, a hefty sum for the average household in the mid-19th century, the company was the first to offer an installment payment plan. By 1863, Singer held 22 patents and sold 20,000 machines annually. Within just another eight years, annual sales reached 180,000, and "Singer" was becoming a household name.

A STITCH IN TIME: Collecting antique sewing machines is a relatively easy hobby, as so many were manufactured and sold worldwide. Unfortunately, the availability also means that there is little demand among serious collectors. Even so, the quality of the craftsmanship of the machines themselves and the intricate woodwork and scrolling on the stands and cabinets that house them make sewing machines popular decorative items. One of the few prized models is the Featherweight, a portable Singer machine introduced in the 1930s that was offered with various models of cabinets, including a unique combination table/cabinet that concealed the machine in a compartment underneath. Of particular interest to collectors are Featherweight table/cabinet models 221 and 68, which were made in the '40s and '50s and advertised as featuring a smooth tabletop that could be used for dining, card-playing or sewing.

Church springs into giveaway | Otago Daily Times Online

Hundreds of bargain hunters descended on City Impact Church for its second annual spring giveaway of pre-loved household goods on Saturday.

Thousands of items of new and old clothes, sports gear, mattresses, toys, pictures, furniture and appliances had been donated by about 200 residents to the Frankton church by 11am on the day.

Between 400 and 500 people queued in eager anticipation for the giveaway to open at 1pm.

Thirteen especially desirable items, including a trampoline, wide-screen televisions and an antique Singer sewing machine, were called "hot items" and were distributed by lucky dips at 2pm.

Senior pastor Dean Payn, speaking on the microphone, was encouraging people to take all items home, while music played on the speakers and free sausages sizzled on the barbecue.

Queenstown resident Ursula McBeck said the giveaway was "amazing" and she had heard about it through friends.

"I got a great table and some blankets for the dog."

She had arrived at 8am, not realising the event started at 1pm.

Barbra Graham, of Queenstown, was pleased with her "retro table" and clothes.

She said the giveaway was "super-nice, helpful and fun".

Large goods were delivered later that afternoon.

Remaining clothes went to Orphans Aid International.

Mr Payn said yesterday the giveaway was a great success and was much bigger than last year's inaugural event.

It tied in with household spring cleaning and he was pleasantly surprised at residents' generosity towards those in need.

"The lady who won the fridge gave it to another lady because she felt she needed it more."

City Impact Church does such a great job in Queenstown. I recall last year they cleaned all the windows at Wakatipu High School, They cleaned up and painted Plunket, they helped do some things in elderly people's homes and I'm sure there's lots, lots more. Well done City Impact Church. You made my day this Spring Giveaway. On behalf of Queenstown Community, thank you so much.

how can i find out how much an old singer sewing machine is worth?

Q: i have a hide-a-way singer sewing machine. seriel #ek161203
model #99k from the singer mfg. co. elizabethport, nj.
simanco.

A: do u know how old it actually is. singer sewing co. can probably tell u how old it is. what it is worth depends on how many people want it and what they are willing to pay for it.

My mom has an old Singer sewing machine, but we don't know what model it is. Help?!?

Q: We used the Singer website, but that didn't help. Here's what we found on the machine...
1st Label---
Sewing Motor
Catalog 3-110
100-110 Volts
25-75 Cycles
AND DC
0.4 Ampere
Simanco USA
700

2nd Label---
Sold And Serviced By
Electro Hygiene CO.
Youngstown's Vacuum
Cleaner And Sowing Center
3808 Southern Blvd. ST. 2-8101

No other labels found. Definitely is a Singer because it has the Singer S found on it and the name of the Singer brand on the side.

A: If you can find the serial number, that can tell you the model of the machine. It might be hiding under the Electro Hygiene label, but I rather doubt it. It's probably pre-early 1960s from the phone number.

Look here for how to find the serial number:
http://www.singerco.com/support/model_nu mber.html

If that still doesn't work, post some photos of the machine someplace and give us the URLs. Good photos of all four sides of the machine, the front of the right hand pillar, and looking down at the needle plate (remove the presser foot) would be good.

There were quite a few counterfeit Singers around for awhile, but they're actually pretty rare in comparison with genuine Singers.

Looking for value of Singer Manf. Co, sewing machine made in G.B Serial # Y709585?

Q: Gold Seal, Singer Manufactuing Company

A: is it antique?
try ebay either way
