I’ve been reading a lot lately about microwaving and how it negatively affects your foods. According to some recent research, microwaving actually alters the composition of your food, not only making it less nutritious but also making it harder for your body to digest it. If that’s the case, it makes me wonder how much we should be microwaving our foods? I find it very convenient for quickly heating up left-overs, but maybe when it comes to cooking my vegetables and other foods it might be better to use something like this Oster Mechanical Food Steamer .
It’s the kind of small kitchen appliance that I know I’d get a lot of use out of. This two tier steamer is perfect for steaming so many healthy dishes plus it has a large bowl that you can cook up to ten cups of rice in it, and another tray that you can make hard or soft-boiled eggs in. It’s super easy to take apart and clean when you’re done too.

I am multitasking with my Oster 2-tier food steamer - Oster 5712 ...
My sister bought me this electric Oster 2-tier food steamer (model 5712) and I've found it to be much better than an old steamer that I had years ago. My old steamer did not cook much at a time and tended to be slow and had to be refilled while cooking. It tends to be user friendly and cooks food nicely without burning it.
How does the food taste?
I have steamed meat, rice, and vegetables with this steamer. The chicken came out thoroughly cooked throughout and delicious. The rice was soft and tasty. The broccoli was a bit too crunchy for my taste when I checked it at the allotted time, but I steamed it a bit longer than the recommended time and it tasted just find to me. The size of the slices and individual tastes can make a difference in how long one wishes to cook with a steamer. Once I have tried a particular food and discover any changes that need to be made, I can make a note of that in the owner's manual that gives suggested times for steaming.
Is it user friendly?
This Oster food steamer has several different parts, but the owner's manual has clear instructions and pictures with recommended times for cooking. The manual gives instructions for steaming rice and grains, vegetables, fish and seafood, meat and eggs (I would have never thought to steam eggs). It also gives helpful hints for reheating breads and leftovers, which I would not have thought to use this to reheat foods, but I will probably take it on our next camping trip to do just that. This could be an alternative to a microwave if a person did not have one available.
The steamer itself also has some pictures of various foods that are commonly steamed with recommended cooking times printed on the front. It has four buttons on the front. One is for turning the unit on and off, two are for decreasing or increasing the amount of time you wish to steam, and one is for setting the timer for delayed cooking. I have not tried the delay cooking, but turning the unit on and pressing the up button until I have reached the cook time is rather easy.

First off this is a VERY attractive appliance. The picture on the website does not do it justice, as weird as that may seem. It is substancial, well built, and looks and feels like something from a professional kitchen. Even though the measurements are documented, the oven just seems bigger. Personally, I think it's too big for a counter and would be best mounted into a unit. There could be some problems with mounting because you absolutely DO need the recommended space above, behind and to the sides - you can't get away with putting it up against anything if you plan on using the steam feature. The convention over works exactly as it should - I made a cake and it came out super-fluffy and perfectly cooked in and out, and very moist. Also made a sandwich and the bread was nice and crispy and the tomatoes inside were perfectly cooked. I made two chickens - one with the steam and one without. Both were good, but the one with the steam did get brown (lightly) and looked better, although they both tasted great and moist. Although the job wheel feels very expensive and all the options are laid out well - I would prefer some buttons, espcially with the microwave. You can't just pop something in and start nuking. YOu have to press the microwave button and then use the wheel to go down one selection and then press enter and then use the wheel to spin to a time and then you can finally hit start. They should have moved that up one level to make it faster. One more thing - oddly enough, it does not put out excessive amounts of heat compared to your regular oven. You can open it during cooking and not get blasted by heat (although you should be careful). And cooking the chickens didn't heat up my whole kitchen or apartment like the oven usually does. The steam will kick up the humidity, but not that much....Where can I find a removable heating element sleeve for my oster steamer 5712?
Q: Getting it from a service center as they suggest is not an option since I live in the middle of nowhere. Any suggestions
A: You could call Oster 1-800-884-4183 but you do not need a sleeve for the steamer to work properly. It'll work just fine w/o it. :)
any body know how to cook rice in a oster steamer?

A: If you want to cook rice – which can be brown rice, long grain and wild rice, regular and long grain rice, and even instant rice – use the included Rice Bowl.
You put the rice and liquid into the rice bowl and place the bowl in the lower steaming bowl and cover with the lid. After the rice is steamed, you can then add your seasonings.
You can follow the cooking times & liquid needed based on the type of rice you are cooking.
Does cooking with a plastic steamer pose a risk of exposure to toxins?
Q: I use an Oster steamer a lot. Great food. High heat. All plastic.
A: I doubt it. But if you are worried there are lots of other ways to steam your food. Basically all you need is a pot with a lid and a little water on the bottom and something to keep the food up out of the water without trapping the steam. I've seen it done with some well cleaned river rocks, colanders. Or you can just buy a steamer basket designed to go inside a pot, which I like 'cause, mine at least, can fold up small and can be used to do all sorts of other nifty things.
